There are cyclists all over the roadways of Tuscany. It is a beautiful landscape regardless of your mode of transportation. They were also preparing for a major event.
When arrived at Montepulciano we immediately went to the Gattavecchi winery which is actually atop some Etruscan caves. The Etruscan people dug into the hilltop creating essentially basements for the storage of the food goods and even deeper for their tombs. The now use these caves for the aging in their casks for Nobile wine. The earth and rock is of volcanic ash so it is soft to carve.
We had a light snack of cheese meat and bread to accompany our wine tasting. We loved the Nobile and discovered it is exported to Total Wines and we can actually buy it cheaper there than here considering shipping costs.
The view from our table
We then walked around the hilltop town. One never gets tired of the Tuscan views.
I loved this art display in the town square
And so we headed on to Montalcino with a short stop in Pienza.
And so we arrive at Poggio Antico estate which means " old hills". This is where Brunello wine is produced. Thomas, you will be pleased that I am having a case sent back which icludes some of the Reserva wines. Extremely good. Perhaps we can exchange one of your delightful meals with one of these delightful wines?
Having completed our purchase we were on for a final drive back to Gaiole with Andrea. we said our goodbyes and exchanged contact information then walked to the town for a final night in the small town in the Tuscan hills.
